  • FOUNDED BY SEB MELCHOR IN 2018, AN AVID COLLECTOR AND PATRON OF THE ARTS, INTEMPERIE WAS BORN TO CELEBRATE THE PATRONAGE AND SUPPORT OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTS.

To best understand the vision behind the gallery and the curated selection of artists represented, one must first understand the meaning of Intemperie… as expressed by Seb, Intemperie is "to be exposed to the elements, to its mercy and fancies. I compare it with being in love – a place which combines formidable natural forces which can render you defenseless and exposed. It is only when one is exposed to specific works of art, movies, or music that you can be enveloped by this overwhelming feeling. Beauty and Strength.”

An Intemperie artist is an artist compelled to create. Our small and impressive stable of artists possess an underlying force in their nature to paint, sculpt or record the world around them through their chosen artistic practice.

Here we present a selection of works by our artists that illustrate their collective urgency to create. Artists who are bold. Artists who are perceptive.

"The world - my interaction with the world is my inspiration. How can I summarise that in a sensitive way, which is art - it could be music or any other way - for myself it is visual art... I am stronger expressing my experience through a visual language"

  • With a formal education in both fine art and anatomy, Javier Murcia's practice is, at its core, an exploration of the possibilities of being alive in this current moment - with the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical being a constant source of inspiration. His work explores notions of perception, the parallel worlds of the real and hyper-real, with a circular relationship to time that sees past, present, and future human and technological developments intertwined. Murcia studied Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna, Canary Islands. His work is held in collections in NZ and overseas and exhibited in private art events and art fairs in Europe and the US.

  • “Everything started when I met Javier while he was still working in the film industry and decided to allocate the money I had saved for my first feature film to help him realize his vision. He locked himself in his studio, surrounded by talented colleagues, and produced an exceptional series of work, the 'Eidos' collection”

  • Greek photographer Spiros Poros delivers powerful and sensitive portrayals of his protagonists and their emotions alongside the physical and cultural environments. Characterised by technical mastery and a strong cinematic quality, he explores and plays with symbols, human values and bittersweet realities. Poros' images reflect respect for the subject and the theme, along with an intense deliberation of each shot. By constantly evolving and re-inventing his method, his unique style has significantly contributed to his notability in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and New Zealand. He has become a favourite photographer of many fashion houses and celebrities, whom he refers to as his' world art family', including Jennifer Lopez, Keira Knightley, Christopher Noth, and Harvey Keitel. He has also worked with a host of collaborators, including Vogue, In Style, Flaunt, Esquire, and The National Ballet of Cuba.

  • I met Spiros through a mutual friend whilst living in Wellington, New Zealand. It is easy to fall under the spell of Spiros' dynamic personality and charisma as well as his multifaceted work which is a faithful reflection of his persona.

"My work is the result of observation, chance, focus on the small objects, what is there that we don't see, what we feel but can't quite grasp, day after day and on repeat"

  • Born in Palencia, Spain, Miguel Garcia, aka Marques de Jadraque, lives and works between Brooklyn and London. Trained from a young age in his hometown and later in Barcelona and Los Angeles, Jadraque is an artist constantly on the move. His work parallels that movement. From figurative to still life to landscapes, his range is wide from the most classically academic to minimalist and abstract.

Jadraque's painting focuses on the space between artist and subject. The work reflects his fascination with capturing that distance, "what is there that we don't see, what we feel but can't quite grasp", he says, and all nuanced by light, colour, form, shape, sound, smell and the atmosphere that surrounds it.

His series' depict commonplace objects in his daily life: clothing lines, spoons, Spanish wine pitchers, frying pans, cups, silverware and kitchen utensils, in which colour and shape are the main appeals for those who admire his exceptional technique. Jadraque's work is part of public and private collections in Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Hong Kong, California, Mexico, The Vatican, Washington D.C., London and New York.
  • Although I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting Marques de Jadraques I greatly enjoy his work's playful and colourful elements.  I marvel at the fact that he can take ordinary objects and present them as the unlikely stars of the show.

"I'm interested in how placing a work in a particular space can alter how we relate to the work and changes how we relate to the space around it. Are we looking at the work, or is the work looking at us?"

  • British-born Max Patté based in Wellington, New Zealand, has, for the past 15 years, been creating a body of work that explores the qualities of the liminal spaces between light and colour. To date, this exploration spans sculpture, painting and light art. Max studied at the Wimbledon School of Art in London (1997-2000) and was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 2008: however, Max credits his technical ability to work across multi-disciplines to his longstanding connection to the film industry.

His work is held in collections internationally, including the infamous art collection of The Groucho Club in London's Soho and the patron of the arts Sir Ian McKellen's private collection, amongst others.
  • My first introduction to Max's practice was experiencing one of his 'Lightworks' at a friend's house. I was utterly mesmerised and became a collector immediately afterwards; Max came to install the work himself. I think it is both a shared sense of aesthetics and entrepreneurial character that made us connect instantly.

  • Born in Piraeus, Greece Nikos has built a strong career in his home country. His practice brings to life in vibrant colour and bold brush stokes the world of dreams and fantasy, with a self-described fixation to create stories to draw. He undertook a formal education in Fine Art at The School of Fine Arts, Athens (1987-1992) under the instruction and guidance of the internationally acclaimed artist N. Kessanlis whose influence is visible to this day in Nikos practice which spans painting, drawing, installation and sculpture.

Nikos has taught and exhibited his artwork extensively in Greece and Europe. A range of his paintings can be seen in the collection of the National Gallery of Greece, the Gallery of Athens Municipality, the Vorres Museum and in several private galleries both at home and overseas.

  • I admire how diverse and personal Nikos' works are. I am particularly drawn to the Chagall-esque style of the Dreams series, how original they are and his use of vibrant colours.
